The Irish in America
Do You Know Where to Find Their Records and Stories? Some 50,000 to 100,000 Irish came to the United States in the 1600s while more than 100,000 arrived in the 1700s. Indentured servitude was a common way of affording migration and in the 1740s the Irish made up 90% of the indentured servants in some colonial regions. In colonial times, the Irish population in America was second in number only to the English. From 1820 to 1860, 1,956,557 Irish arrived, 75% of them after the Great Irish Famine of 1845-1852.
If you want to trace your Irish ancestors back to Ireland you must usually identify the specific parish or townland from which they came. Knowing only the county in Ireland may not be enough.
Irish emigrant names appear in many types of genealogical records. Join us on March 1st as we explore resources (free and for fee) which may help you find a pot of gold -- the stories of your Irish ancestors!
