Digitally Preserving the World’s Cemeteries
Sometimes it takes a crowd -- or crowdsourcing -- to find and preserve our history. Gravestones can reveal information about our families but time is erasing gravestones throughout the world. We need a crowd!
A new global crowdsourcing initiative to digitally preserve the world’s cemeteries has been launched by BillionGraves billiongraves.com and MyHeritage www.myheritage.com. In just two years, BillionGraves has already amassed millions of headstone records, uploaded by 70,000 volunteers, but much more remains to be done. On Saturday, Schelly Talalay Dardashti, MyHeritage's US Genealogy Advisor, will demonstrate the information that can be revealed about your family via gravestones and we will learn about the newest, easiest, free way that you can contribute to the preservation of your family histories. A multilingual mobile app will support this international crowd-sourcing initiative to digitally preserve cemeteries around the world and capture their GPS locations. Gather your family, a church group, a scout troop and preserve history!
The May 3rd program will be Using HeritageQuest. HeritageQuest is a genealogy database provided by the Rio Rancho Public Library. If you have a Rio Rancho Library card and home computer with Internet service you may use this database from home!
